Start Where You Are: Making Sense of Symptoms and Finding a Way Forward
Begin gently by making sense of your symptoms and understanding how POTS affects the body. You’ll hear Dr Michaelia’s story and learn why a whole person, hope-filled approach matters. We’ll also introduce your first healing mindset—There Is Always a Way Forward— an invitation to shift from fear into curiosity. You don’t need all the answers to begin. This week, we start with hope.
-
Understanding Your Symptoms and Getting a Diagnosis
Learn how POTS is diagnosed, how to do a NASA Lean Test and what conditions need to be excluded. We’ll also explore the limitations of testing and why recognising symptom patterns may be just as important.
-
Fluids, Salt, and Compression—Foundations for Daily Functioning
Learn how hydration, salt and compression support circulation and reduce crashes. You’ll also get practical tips for tracking intake and finding what works for you.
-
Rhythms, Hormones and Nervous System Regulation
Explore circadian rhythms and nervous system retraining. Learn how making lifestyle changes can support hormonal health, energy and healing from the inside out.
-
Bowel Health, Constipation and Listening to the Gut
Understand how constipation and bowel dysfunction can be related to POTS—and how to address them with compassion and practical support.
-
Stabilising Blood Sugar and Creating Momentum for Healing
Learn how blood sugar swings can mimic or worsen POTS and what to do about it. We’ll also zoom out to celebrate your progress and reinforce daily rhythms for long-term support.

Firstly, thank you for your patience. I know how hard it is to wait when you're unwell and searching for answers.
Due to ongoing demand and a full clinical load, I’m no longer able to offer 1:1 consultations in the way many of you hoped. But this isn’t the end of the story—it’s the beginning of a new one.
The Rise Gently course was created to bring together all the tools, insights and practical guidance I used in my one-on-one work, but in a way that is more affordable, accessible and easier to absorb over time. It’s the next best thing to sitting with me in a consultation—just delivered in a weekly, paced format that allows you to apply what you're learning step by step.
-
Because I wanted to help more people in a way that’s sustainable and affordable. One-on-one consultations are valuable but costly—and often patients need far more than an initial one hour consultation.
Rise Gently delivers the same high-quality information I would give in consults—but spaced out over 6 weeks, with reflection exercises, community connection and optional Q&A sessions so you can absorb and apply what you’re learning.
-
Yes. In fact, Week 2 of the course is all about recognising symptoms, identifying patterns and conducting simple home-based screening tests like the NASA Lean Test.
You'll learn how to think like a GP:
What is going on in my body—could this be POTS?
What else could it be?
What diagnoses must not be missed?
How can I confirm my suspicions?
You’ll also get:
Step-by-step instructions for home testing
Support interpreting common patterns on the NASA lean test (this is especially important if your GP isn’t familiar with POTS)
A checklist of recommended investigations to request from your GP
A printable handout to help you summarise your symptoms and test results
-
Yes. Many patients continue to experience debilitating symptoms despite a diagnosis. This course was designed to fill the gap between diagnosis and sustainable management.
You’ll receive practical tools from my years of working with POTS patients and collaborating with specialists and allied health professionals. This includes:
Nervous system regulation
Lifestyle and mindset shifts that support healing
Understanding and troubleshooting common symptom drivers
Tips and tricks not found in the textbooks
-
Most likely—yes. Even patients who’ve been managing POTS for years often tell me they discover missing foundations or finally feel the information "click" after going through it with me.
I share insights and practical strategies I’ve learned through years of clinical experience—not just theory or textbook recommendations. And I teach from a whole-person perspective, so even if you’ve heard it before, it will likely land differently.
-
There’s a lot of information online—but it can be overwhelming, contradictory or overly simplistic. Here’s how Rise Gently is different:
It’s written by a medical doctor with both clinical and lived experience
It’s structured, step-by-step and designed to be applied
It goes beyond just salt and fluids—addressing deeper drivers like stress, hormones, blood sugar and nervous system dysregulation
It includes mindset-based healing tools to shift how you relate to your body and your symptoms
It empowers you to take ownership of your healing journey
-
Absolutely—it’s a real, physiological condition. But how we respond to our symptoms, what we believe about our capacity to heal and the choices we make each day all play a powerful role in shaping our nervous system.
I’ve seen again and again how shifting beliefs creates new outcomes—not because symptoms are imagined, but because the body and brain are interconnected. That’s why mindset is woven through the course alongside the clinical content.
-
This is incredibly common—and not a sign that your GP doesn’t care. Most GPs are juggling multiple complex patients in short time slots and often don’t have the resources or experience to confidently manage POTS.
In Rise Gently, I provide:
Clear summaries and action steps to take to your GP
Handouts to guide conversations and next steps
Strategies to make the most of short appointments
A framework for creating a supportive care team
I’ll help you feel more confident in partnering with your GP—even if they’re still learning.
-
I’m so sorry if this has been your experience. You deserve to be heard, believed and supported. Sadly, some patients are dismissed or told they’re imagining their symptoms. That’s not okay.
If this is your situation:
Know it’s not your fault
You may need to find a GP who is at least open to listening, even if they’re unfamiliar with POTS
The course includes handouts and strategies to help advocate for yourself
I’ll guide you in building a healthcare team that validates and empowers you
You don’t need a perfect GP—just one willing to learn and walk with you.
